We are happy to announce the launch of the English Benchmark Young Learners emulator. Free software that allows students to take the test from a laptop or desktop computer. This gives teachers more opportunities to measure English proficiency in a fun and stress-free way.

Before that was the English Benchmark Young Learners App was only compatible with tablet devices. The updated emulator now makes the test more accessible to schools that do not have access to tablets. It also makes it easier to incorporate this interactive “test that doesn’t feel like a test” into your remote classroom. After all, not all students have access to a tablet at home.

How does it work? How do you get started? Let’s learn more:

How it works

The English Benchmark Young Learners emulator is an application that allows teachers and students to run the test through a computer when it is installed. Nothing else changes with the tablet version of the test – and the admin experience and the teacher’s rating are exactly the same.

To use English Benchmark Young Learners with a computer, all students need is:

  • A laptop or desktop computer
  • A headset with a microphone boom
  • An internet connection
  • A separate mouse and keyboard (not required, but recommended)

Since the test records speak, it is also important for students to get young English-benchmarked students out of a quiet, distraction-free space.

One of the best parts about the emulator? Installation for Windows is free and easy. The Mac version will be released in the coming weeks. It is available at each of the six levels, and there is also a “light” version that does not require downloading test data but requires a reliable continuous internet connection.

Lots of support

At Pearson, we strive to make the entire testing process as easy and smooth as possible for you, your learners, and their parents. If you have a question about how to review the results or how to fix a technical roadblock, you’ve come to the right place.

Our Teacher’s Guide to the Young Learner English Benchmark Emulator has a number of lessons for teachers including:

  • Download and set up the emulator
  • Prepare the test room and equipment
  • Help students pass the exam with practice tests
  • Model test behavior for younger students
  • Review the results and generate reports
  • And much more

For more information, including links to download the emulator, visit our teacher support pages Here.

We also provide support to help teachers reach out to parents who need to set up the test at home. This includes template notifications to parents, as well as a parenting guide with step-by-step setup instructions that can be shared with the parents or caregivers of young learners.

A powerful new tool for English Benchmark Young Learners

English Benchmark Young Learners tests speaking, listening, reading and writing. It uses interactive activities and playful graphics to motivate students ages 6-14 to enjoy the assessment.

The fast and accurate computerized assessment provides teachers with detailed descriptions of each student’s performance. It also shows how the class is doing as a whole and provides recommendations on what to teach in future lessons.

With English Benchmark, teachers receive an excellent basic measurement of learners’ English proficiency at the beginning of the semester. It has the ability to closely monitor student performance and process and to see when young learners are ready to take English exams for senior skates based on their test scores, which match the CEFR and GSE scales.

Now the “English Benchmark Young Learners” emulator is paving the way to make testing fun and easy for even younger learners and teachers.
