To celebrate Earth Day, the ACS Malaysia Chapter and ACS Publications jointly organized a virtual lecture on the topic of “Restore the Earth” on April 22, 2021. The talk held via Zoom was attended not only by spectators from Malaysia, but also by people from Malaysia from around the Asia-Pacific region.

The talk was given by Professor Shane Snyder, Editor-in-Chief of ACS ES & T water. He is also the Executive Director of the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore.

The event was hosted by the Chairman of the ACS Malaysia Chapter, Dr. Mohd Firdaus Abdul Wahab, opened. During the lecture, Professor Shane Snyder shared details about water research at his institute and over ACS ES & T water. The journal focuses on water quality, anthropogenic and geogenic contaminants, and environmental chemistry and technology for sustainable water management and reuse.

Professor Shane Snyder on “Implementing the best available technology in underserved communities: Challenges and opportunities for sustainability”.

“The Chapter is honored that Professor Shane Snyder welcomes our event again. His expertise and the activities carried out at NEWRI align well with many of the activities in the chapter on sustainability of water and environmental protection through chemistry. We hope to have more engagements with Professor Snyder and NEWRI in the future. Many thanks to ACS Publications for organizing this program together and for its great success. “

“Excellent talk about work done by NTU on water treatment. Nice job ensuring safe water for everyone. “

-DR. Nurul Huda Abd Karim, Treasurer, Chapter ACS Malaysia.

“It was an absolutely amazing and enlightening conversation on the special occasion of Earth Day. I enjoyed it immensely and was educated by Professor Shane Snyder on how to implement the best available technology in underserved communities. It was very informative and valuable to recognize the challenges and opportunities for sustainability. More importantly, the “water quiz” session was well structured. This talk encouraged me to attend future ACS events / symposia. Thank you ACS Malaysia Chapter for organizing such an excellent meeting. “

-DR. Asheesh Kumar, scientist at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum

“An interesting and informative talk about wastewater treatment around the world. It gave me insightful ideas on how to improve water research from the laboratory to the community. “

-DR. Krishna veni Veloo, University of Malaysia Kelantan

“My experience attending the Earth Day lecture was extremely rewarding as Prof. Shane Snyder, the resource’s speaker, was very knowledgeable and yet very accommodating to the participants. The knowledge I gained from the event on recent scientific breakthroughs in solving environmental problems was well worth the time and effort. I was inspired to do the same by helping our vulnerable societies through research and development to have their own sources of clean water and energy. I loved this short seminar because it gave me insight into the direction and strategies I can use to start the legal profession. I recommend the American Chemical Society Malaysia chapter to make this webinar possible even during this time of the pandemic. I enjoyed it, especially the quiz part where all participants were asked to actively participate. “

-Rogelio O. Rantael Jr., Scientific Research Specialist II, DOST – Forest Products Research and Development Institute, Philippines

“This talk helped raise students’ awareness that everyone must play their part in restoring the earth and changing the world for the better.”

-Eka Latiffah Nadia, M.Phil. Student, University of Technology Malaysia
