The COVID-19 pandemic has brought teledentistry and distance learning to the fore in policy considerations. Teledentistry supports the provision of oral health services through electronic means of communication and connects providers and patients without the usual time and space restrictions. The unique ability of teledentistry to connect disadvantaged rural communities and the home-bound with dentists makes this method particularly well suited to address the lack of access during and after the pandemic.

Teledentistry can be used for counseling and triage so that providers can advise patients whether their dental problems require urgent or emergency care, whether a condition could be temporarily relieved at home, or whether treatment could be postponed. Telescopic dentistry and distance learning can also be used to facilitate access to preventive services and oral health education.

In support of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Wellbeing and SDG 10: Reducing Inequalities, BMC oral health launched a new collection to bring research together with teledentistry or distance learning to:

  • Improve access to oral health care.
  • Support the provision of oral health services.
  • Make provision easier.
  • Facilitate professional and public oral health education.

Items considered for publication within the collection will be rated according to the standard BMC oral health editorial criteria and is subject to the journal’s standard peer-reviewed process, that of Dr Center). If accepted for publication, an item processing fee will apply (with standard waiver policy).

The collection is now open for submissions!
