Who said you have to be at the computer to learn a language? We want you to take your learning with you on the go – that’s why the Rosetta Stone app is packed with features that enable mobile, bite-sized learning. We’ve even developed mobile-exclusive features that enhance immersive learning and encourage you to interact with your surroundings, whether you’re studying in the classroom or on the way to work.
We believe the most effective language tools are the ones that fit your schedule and your lifestyle. The Rosetta Stone app is flexible, allows you to work at your own pace, and ensures you can start speaking a new language right away.
The Rosetta Stone app
Today we’re focusing on six app features designed to help you get the most out of your language stay. It can be accessed after downloading the Rosetta Stone app for your iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or Android tablet.
Here’s a look at the six learning tools we’ll dive into:
- Rosetta stone courses
- Live lessons
- Audio companion
- Search and speak
While Rosetta Stone courses are the core component of your language learning experience, the additional features of the app can help you achieve your unique goals faster. If you’re looking for an interactive experience, Seek and Speak is fun in the real world while building vital conversation skills.
Stories, phrasebooks, and audio guides are bite-sized exercises for voice contact and solo practice. And live lessons will help you take the next step, with expert-led lessons and opportunities to network with fellow students.
Immerse yourself in each of the following functions and discover a new tool for your language trip!
Rosetta stone courses
Rosetta Stone courses are the foundation of your language trip. Each unit takes you through a series of core lessons and exercises that focus on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and listening comprehension.
We make mobile learning fun and functional:
- Bite-sized lessons with estimated practice times – most lessons only last 5-10 minutes!
- Downloadable units for offline use
- Speech recognition via telephone or headphone microphones
You want to spend most of your time studying in courses to master the basics, but we highly recommend adding other features to your learning! Practice time in courses depends on you and your progress goals. For most learners, we recommend 30 minutes a day.
We are all about learning at your own pace and making the most of your practice time. Enter phrasebook. Whether you’re traveling or looking to create a closer connection with your local community, Phrasebook can help you build language skills for daily interaction.
You have several categories to choose from, and each one contains keywords for common interactions. From greetings and polite sentences to shopping and health and safety, Phrasebook lets you switch between topics at your leisure.
After selecting a category, you can flip through phrases, much like you would with a stack of digital flashcards. Each sentence includes on-demand pronunciation from native speakers as well as Rosetta Stone’s TruAccent speech recognition, which ensures your pronunciation is easily understood.
Phrasebook is a fantastic way to learn new phrases in a short amount of time. Here’s a challenge – see how many sentences you can learn between classes or on your morning commute!
Stories bring life to conversation. It is human nature to tell stories and to enjoy hearing them! Rosetta Stones Stories capture our universal love of storytelling with bite-sized narratives that will captivate you and help you hone your listening skills.
Each unit has a variety of stories to choose from – some you will go through in a snap and others can take with you for a while – that match the unit’s key skills and proficiency levels. The emphasis is, of course, on language learning, but stories are a great introduction to the culture that surrounds any language. You will find an additional cultural context and story in each narrative that will improve your understanding of the language as a whole.
Once you’ve decided on a story, it’s up to you to decide how you want to interact with it. You can read it to improve your understanding or listen to a native speaker read. We strongly recommend that you take the third option – record yourself reading! – to get additional pronunciation and speaking practice.
Each story is downloadable so you can listen to it on the go. Put them on the lineup alongside your favorite foreign language podcasts for a truly immersive experience!
Live Lessons is new to the app and takes you to the next level of language learning with expert-led, live courses delivered straight to your phone. You will have the opportunity to attend interactive lectures that address topics at your unit level. Every 25-minute livestream allows you to answer surveys, chat with other learners, and practice your pronunciation.
The Live tab in the Rosetta Stone app also provides a library of on-demand videos for you to watch on the go, including conversation tips and short videos on common pronunciation pitfalls to avoid. Like Rosetta Stones Stories, you can expand your cultural knowledge with travel videos and regional interviews.
Like the Rosetta Stone stories, the lessons in the Audio Companion are downloadable, playable offline, and directly match the units in the Rosetta Stone core lessons. Each Audio Companion lesson takes you through the vocabulary, statements and questions that are covered in the corresponding unit. Similar to a traditional language study tape, native speakers will say key phrases and you will be asked to repeat your pronunciation to refine your pronunciation.
Audio Companion lessons are best used with the unit you are currently working on, but you can also use them as a quick review of important vocabulary and phrases, or as a preview of future material.
Search and speak
Who doesn’t love the thrill of a scavenger hunt? As an exclusive feature of the Rosetta Stone iOS apps for selected languages, Seek and Speak creates fun, vocabulary-based challenges from your real world and turns them into personalized conversation exercises.
First, choose any challenge to start “collecting” items! You will be asked to use your smartphone’s camera to take pictures that meet the challenge requirements. Nathalie took up her challenge at a Paris farmers market to improve her French, but you don’t have to travel to take advantage of this feature. You’ll be able to complete your interactive scavenger hunt and build your language skills from the comfort of your home, office, or classroom!
After you’ve gathered all five elements for each challenge, Seek and Speak will walk you through the key conversation sayings and questions related to the elements you selected. For example, if you’ve chosen the Fruit Challenge, you will learn how to formulate questions and statements about fruit, how much fruit you like, how much fruit you have, and how fruit fits into your dessert plans. After practicing reading and speaking, you will have the opportunity to use these sentences in a personalized conversation with audio recordings from native speakers.
Seek and Speak relies heavily on our principle of dynamic immersion – we believe the best way to learn a language is to really immerse yourself in dialogue. This feature takes everyday objects and turns them into fun learning opportunities.
