We are going to discuss the construction of a line segment here. We know how to draw a line segment of a certain length. Suppose we want to draw a line segment 4.5 cm in length.

We follow the following steps as given below:

Step I: We put a scale on a sheet of paper as shown below. Step II: We put the pointed tip of a pencil on the point that coincides with 0 on the scale and call it A.

Step III: We mark another point B, which coincides with the fifth millimeter division after the 4th centimeter. (1 small division = 1 mm.)

Step IV: We connect the two points A and B by drawing a line segment with a fine, pointed pencil. The line segment AB has a length of 4.5 cm.

To draw a line segment:

Now let’s learn how to draw a line segment of a certain length.

Step I: Put the ruler on the paper. Then mark two points P and Q against marks 0 and 9 on the scale. Step II: Holding the scale evenly, move the pencil from P to Q along the edge of the scale. The line segment PQ has a length of 9 cm. I. Using the ruler, draw line segments of the following lengths:

(i) 9 cm

(ii) 3 cm

(iii) 10 cm

(iv) 5 cm

(v) 7 cm

II. Draw two line segments PQ and QR, each 4 cm long, so that they meet at point Q. Measure the length of the line segment PR.
